How do the junk mailers get their address lists?
The majority of junk email is sent to addresses collected either by harvester robots scanning web pages or from virus infected computers sending address book lists from programmes such as Outlook Express. So, how can you help reduce junk mail? Have you ever sent single emails to more than one recipient, such as seasonal greetings, family news, etc? If so, you probably used the 'cc' feature in your email programme. This will result in each of those addresses being saved into each recipients mail programme. A brief explanation That is to say, if I send an email to Mr. A, Mr. B and Mr. C, who are unknown to each other, by using the 'cc' facility, I have effectively given the 3 recipients each others email address. Should any one of the 3 become virus infected or manage to pick up a Trojan infection, the other 3 address will be both, sent the same infection and 'seen as' the senders of this infection and added to some unscrupulous email spammers recipient list. What can you do to help? Do not, under any circumstances use the 'cc' facility (unless of course you can vouch for the security of all recipient computers). Either send individual emails or use the 'Bcc' facility. In this way you will be reducing the rate of virus infection from computer to computer and reducing also the quantity of spam mail, that is calculated as over 60% of all emails. |
