A sailboat trip out of Ibiza
Before my arrival,
my friend had arranged to charter a sailboat, with some
friends and I was, of course, invited along.
For a very reasonable fee,
we were
offered a day out sailing around the sunny Ibiza coastline. Excellent, I
thought.
We were met, down by the waters edge,
at around 10:00 am, by a Frenchman with a beard and his attractive female
crewmember. Since there were 5 of us guests, we were ferried out in two trips
of the tiny dinghy, or should I say tendered out.
After a lot of activity,
which we stood around and watched interestedly, the
engine was started and the boat lines were dropped, ready to motor to sailing
safety in open waters.
Excitement was mounting,
it was a beautiful sunny day
and, although I had been sailing many times, this was the first time I had been
on sailboat with two masts. But all was not well, as we were about to discover.
The motor would not engage gear,
neither forwards nor backwards. We were
adrift amoungst the small boats in San Antonio harbour. Fortunately a
neighbouring sailor came to our assistance and we returned to the boat moorings.
After some time
trying to repair the problem, the 'captain' finally had to give
in and we were ferried (or is it tendered?) back to shore to fend for ourselves.
The decision was taken
for us all to go to a nearby beach and just soak up the
sun for the rest of the day. Not what I would have chosen, but a beautiful
beach non the less.
That evening
my friend put together a delicious meal at home, we played a little guitar and
later went out
on the town.
Although the town was fairly quiet,
several bars were open and we finally
settled on an excelent Spanish music bar which we enjoyed until about 5:00 am.
Of course, I can't remember the name of the damned place, but it was a long
day, you understand!
